Shelf Life Book Review: Wisdom Literature

Stephen M. Vantassel

Wisdom Literature (Eerdmans Commentaries on the Dead Sea Scrolls)
Eerdmans, 2011

This book is the second of a proposed 16-volume commentary series on the Dead Sea Scrolls. In the introduction, John Kampen presents the relevance of the scrolls for understanding the Old and New Testaments. After summarizing each text, he reviews research, discusses literary elements and key terms, and proceeds to a line-by-line commentary.

Kampen attempts to make these texts accessible to a wider audience. The book contains an index of Scripture references and ancient texts, but Kampen cautions against searching for simple “prooftext” parallels between the Dead Sea Scrolls and the New Testament. This book will be useful for anyone looking for insight into Jewish thought in extrabiblical texts.
