Jesus and His Own: A Commentary on John 13–17
Eerdmans, 2011

In this work, Daniel B. Stevick describes the three levels at play in John’s Gospel. The first “basic” level consists of the words and deeds of Jesus that are recorded in John. The second level—the community behind the Gospel—focuses on the conflicts and situations the community faced. The final level explores the interaction between the Gospel and modern-day readers.

Jesus and His Own is a literary and theological commentary focused on reading Jesus’ “farewell discourse” as a whole. Though his commentary does not devote much time to historical-critical issues, Stevick’s discussion maintains theological depth.
