Shelf Life Book Review: What the Bible Really Tells Us

What the Bible Really Tells Us: The Essential Guide to Biblical Literacy
The Rowman & Littlefield Publishing Group, 2011

In this book, T.J. Wray seeks to address the problem of biblical illiteracy by guiding us into a better understanding of the Bible.

In the first three chapters, Wray identifies problems that have surfaced because of biblical illiteracy, and then addresses the root causes. In order to help us approach the Bible in its own context, Wray offers basic tools for reading and understanding the text. In the last seven chapters, she provides opportunities to employ these tools on issues such as money, the environment, sexuality, and heaven and hell. In each chapter, she addresses several commonly held assumptions about what the Bible says, and then determines whether they are accurate. Not everyone will agree with Wray’s response to these matters, but anyone eager to study biblical context will benefit from this book.
